Elephant Care International Website Updated (www.elephantcare.org)
Visit the Elephant Care International website to view new content and updates. An Elephant Formulary has been added. The Elephant Formulary was created in conjunction with Donald C. Plumb, Pharm D., author of the Veterinary Drug Handbook. We have edited the original to include only those drugs with known or potential use in elephants. Elephant specific information, derived primarily from published literature, has been added to existing drug monographs. Drugs used in elephants that did not appear in the original work have also been added. Anecdotal information is included as this remains a valuable source of information. The purpose of this Formulary is to compile drug information pertinent to elephants in one place that is readily accessible globally and in a format that can be easily updated. Contributions or comments are welcome.
Also new are ISIS physiological values for Asian elephants (data for African elephants will be added soon). Current information on West Nile virus, ELISA testing for TB, and herpesvirus testing is posted.
The bibliographic database of elephant healthcare and conservation information has been updated through June 2004 and over 200 new articles added, many with abstracts. A link to the complete list of “what’s new” can be found on our home page. Susan Mikota DVM and Hank Hammatt (webmaster) (firstname.lastname@example.org or email@example.com)
