Research:

A small project such as a case report or similar project is required, and will be presented at the end of the externship.

Responsibilities:

The student will spend a minimum of 40 hours per week at the zoo, observing and assisting the staff veterinarians with all aspects of clinical work including treatments, immobilizations, necropsies, lab work, surgery, and animal records. The zoo has a very modern veterinary hospital and is fully staffed with 3 full-time veterinarians, 1 veterinary intern, 3 veterinary technicians, 2 hospital keepers, and 1 clerical assistant.

Duration:

4-8 weeks

The student will support the zoo’s veterinary department by assisting with all aspects of veterinary care to a diverse collection of over 900 animals. The externship is designed to introduce the student to the field of zoo/exotic veterinary medicine. The extern will report directly to the zoo’s veterinarian.

A research project is not required but is highly encouraged and supported by the zoo.
