Clinical Experience (to be gained during program):

Students will gain experience in all aspects of zoo medicine, including anesthesia, preventive medicine, physical examination, diagnostic testing, parasitology, and pathology of a variety of hoofstock, carnivore, primate, avian, amphibian, and reptilian species. Students will become familiar with the MedARKS medical records program.

Research:

Opportunities available based on personal interest and motivation of student extern.

Responsibilities:

Students will assist veterinarians and veterinary technicians in all aspects of animal health care. Students will assist in planning immobilizations and diagnostic procedures. Students will be required to complete a project during the externship on a subject mutually agreed upon by the student and externship coordinator.

Duration:

Minimum 3 weeks, Maximum 6 weeks

Application Requests:

Students must submit a cover letter, CV, and three references with contact information.

Application Deadline:

There is no official deadline; however, students generally apply 12 to 18 months prior to desired externship start date

Class Standing:

Student must be in the clinical phase of veterinary school

Proof of health insurance coverage must be provided. Student must have liability insurance coverage (generally provided under the veterinary school's policy)

Expenses:

Students are responsible for their own housing and transportation expenses.

Proof of a negative TB test within 30 days of externship start date is required.
