Clinical Experience: General Zoo Animals

Responsibilities: Accompany veterinarians, assist with physical and chemical restraint, diagnosis, treatment, surgery, radiology of zoo animals.
Duration: 6 weeks preferred, but adjustments possible.

Clinical Experience (to be gained during program)
General zoo and aquarium medicine and surgery, including preventative medicine, anesthesia, radiology, internal medicine and surgery.
Student project/presentation to be completed during externship; potential to participate in ongoing research projects
Assisting veterinarians and technicians with daily care of animals undergoing medical and surgical treatment; assisting veterinary technicians with daily activities including filling prescriptions, in-house laboratory work, and procedure set-up; reading assigned materials; completing various research tasks related to animal health, as requested by the veterinarians; entering medical records into ZIMS under the supervision of the veterinary staff.

At least 3 months prior to requested start date; slots are now filling approx. 1 year in advance
4th year veterinary student (will consider 3rd year student if in clinical year)
Available for rent, located adjacent to zoo grounds, must request in advance
Must have own transportation
Must provide proof of medical insurance
Proof of TB test and rabies vaccine or titer within last 6 months; tetanus vaccine recommended
Does program accept International applicants?
Work day is 8-5+, Monday-Friday. Student may be required to come in on some weekends for active clinical cases
