Misc: Externship program is offered to senior veterinary students with a strong interest in  aquatic animal medicine and husbandry.  Students will be expected to participate for 30-40 hours per week with husbandry staff and consulting veterinarian in a flexible, broad-based 5-6 week program. The extern will become familiar with the day-to-day duties of the consulting veterinarian, quarantine design, life support system design, nutrition, husbandry, medicine and surgery for animals on exhibit at the SC Aquarium. Emphasis will be placed on each extern's specific needs or interests.  Due to our recent efforts in sea turtle rescue and rehabilitation, there is a heavy weighting in sea turtle medicine and management. Additional experiences in aquatic animal medicine may be available outside the aquarium as opportunities present themselves, which may include raptor medicine and rehabilitation, marine mammal stranding and necropsies, sea turtle biology and rehabilitation,  shrimp viruses, etc.
