Clinical Experience (to be gained during program):

Exposure to the medical, diagnostic, therapeutic, and surgical management of a diverse collection of zoo and aquatic animals. Student will also have the opportunity to gain insight into the husbandry and behavioral management by shadowing in different departments.

Research:

Student is expected to complete a small project or case report for presentation to staff.

Responsibilities:

Assist the veterinary staff with all facets of zoo animal medicine: veterinary procedures, quarantine, hospital treatments, veterinary rounds, medical records, anesthesia, radiology, surgery, preventative medicine, literature searches.

Clinical Experience (to be gained during program)

Students will work with two full time veterinarians, two full time licensed veterinary technicians, and two full time hospital keepers. They will experience the day to day operations of the zoo assisting with preventative and emergency care as well as learning animal husbandry as the opportunity arises. 

 


Research

If the time and opportunity allow it, students are encouraged to come up with a retrospective or prospective research project.

Responsibilities

Students are responsible for assisting the veterinarian team with day to day care of animal care operations. They will be responsible for researching and studying about upcoming and current cases, and assist with examinations, clinical procedures and surgery. They will have the opportunity to expand their cytology and hematological skills. Students are responsible for presenting a 30-60 minute powerpoint presentation towards the end of their externship to the animal care staff on either a current, pertinent topic or on a research project performed by the student.
