Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo & Aquarium veterinary internship is a one year post DVM training program designed to provide a broad exposure to both the medical and surgical aspects of zoological medicine. The primary purpose of this internship is to encourage the participant to apply basic skills and knowledge acquired in veterinary school and clinical practice to the health care and case management of a zoological collection. In addition to the zoo which includes a rainforest, desert dome and aquarium, there is a drive through wildlife safari park located approximately 35 miles from the zoo. The collection contains a variety of animals including multiple species of hoof stock, great apes, primates, carnivores, pachyderms, birds, reptiles, amphibians, invertebrates, aquatics, and also pinnipeds. In addition to clinical medicine, this position provides interaction and opportunities in herd health management and joint research with the reproductive physiology, genetics, and nutrition departments as well as other zoological institutions. *Hours are typically during a five day work week. However, hours may vary tremendously depending on the needs of the collection, season and individual cases. The intern will be expected to come early or stay late when necessary and to be available on week ends when an emergency occurs or the other veterinarians are off property or out of town.
