Experience Required:

Applicants must have a DVM or equivalent veterinary medical degree and have completed 1 year of internship (small or large animal) or equivalent private practice experience. Applicants must become licensed to practice veterinary medicine in Maryland within three months of obtaining the position. Applicants must currently possess or be eligible to obtain DEA registration and USDA accreditation and a valid driver's license.

Program Description:

This one-year internship focuses on training in all aspects of the medical and surgical care of zoo animals, including diagnosis, treatment, preventative medicine, parasitology, nutrition, anesthesiology, pathology, record keeping, and staff communication regarding zoological cases. The intern will be required to develop and carry out a research project for presentation at a scientific meeting with the goal of publication. The intern will spend blocks of time at the National Aquarium in Baltimore (NAIB), Tristate Bird Rescue, and the Maryland Department of Natural Resources, as well as involvement in cases and rounds at Johns Hopkins Department of Comparative Pathology, depending on the interests of the individual. Monthly case rounds are conducted with the veterinary staff from the NAIB and resident rounds and journal club with Smithsonian's National Zoological Park.
