Linda Munson
(Submitted by Dr. Scott Citino)

As many of you already know, our community recently lost a tremendous friend and colleague.  An inspiration to many of us, Linda Munson was a ball of energy in constant pursuit of answers to difficult questions involving wildlife health and pathology.  Her passion was carnivores, especially felids and canids, and I’m sure for most of you, when her name was mentioned, cheetahs were the first thing that came to mind.  This was expressed even in her loves at home, two Gordon Setters named Poppy and Cholla.  Her work comparing health and pathology of captive and free-ranging cheetahs became a model program for other species, and her many scientific publications on cheetahs, island foxes, wild dogs, lions, canine distemper, reproductive pathology of wildlife, etc. will remain with us for years as benchmarks.  Her trademark was collaboration which was at the forefront of many of her publications and apparent in her constant involvement and leadership in TAGS, SSPs, CBSG, and other organizations. However, her greatest legacy will be what she left behind in all of us - her colleagues, her residents, her students - a little of her passion, relentless questioning mind and pursuit of answers, scientific integrity, and zeal for teaching and training others.  Linda approached her own health issues with the same scientific questioning and tenacity, and after many years of battling a difficult cancer, many of us came to believe that she wouldn’t let it defeat her.  In the end, it took her life but it didn’t defeat her - her resolve in fighting it gave us all those extra years with her.    Linda was foremost a friend to me, and I know she would not want us to mourn her death, but to celebrate her life and continue making the world a better place for the animals we respect.  When you are on the beach, in the desert, or in Africa, remember her because those are the places she loved.  Linda enjoyed a good glass of red wine, so open a bottle and raise a glass to a tremendous friend and colleague.
