INTRODUCTION

HOW TO USE THIS MANUAL

Thank you for your efforts to collect samples for the numerous research projects regarding the health and nutrition of rhinoceroses.  To date, your cooperative efforts have supplied a variety of research projects with material for their studies.  Numerous scientific publications and presentations have resulted.  Most importantly, these findings are building a firmer base for our understanding of rhinoceros health and nutrition.

To submit samples, just go through the following steps:

  1. Collect the appropriate sample as outlined in the “Summary of Tests and Samples on pages 6-8.
  2. Make copies of the “Submission Form” (pages 4-5) for each animal and collection date.  Once it is completed, it can be copied and mailed to each researcher.
  3. Store or ship the samples as outlined in the “Summary of Tests and Samples” on pages 6-8.  Addresses appropriate for express shipments are listed in the Directory of Researchers and Veterinary Advisors (pages 18-23).
  4. If collecting samples for a suspected specific disease, check the list of recommended diagnostic and research samples on pages 11-13.
  5. If possible, contact each researcher prior to shipment of samples.  Names and phone numbers, email and FAX numbers are located in the Directory of Researchers and Scientific Advisors (pages 18-23).  NOTE:  some of the tests listed require a lab fee; please check the listed information carefully.  An asterik (*) indicates a fee-based test.  Call the contact individual with any specific questions.
  6. If you have specific questions, consult with the individual included in the description of each project.  If you have additional questions, please contact:

SUMMARY OF RESEARCH PROJECT INFORMATION

Please review shipping information carefully.  Unless otherwise noted, all shipping is paid by submitter.  Some tests may require additional lab fees – contact investigator PRIOR to shipping.

Serum and Tissue Bank – Dr. Eric Miller

Dr. Miller has maintained a serum and tissue bank for the Rhinoceros TAG.  These materials are vital to maintaining a central sera bank for all rhinoceros species.

Shipping information for samples:

Ship to address listed in investigator directory (Dr. Eric Miller).  The samples can be frozen locally and shipped at a later date, frozen, overnight on dry ice.

Nutritional Analyses – Dr. Ellen Dierenfeld

Dr. Dierenfeld continues to measure vitamin A&E, fatty acid and mineral levels in plasma and tissues in all rhinoceros species.  This provides baseline information for these species, including samples from free-ranging animals.

Shipping information for samples:

For all species, it would be useful to have detailed information on diets when samples are taken; include accurate estimates of the amounts of hays (grass, mixed, legume), browse (including species), pellets or other concentrates, produce, and any supplements consumed per animal per day.

Ship to address listed in investigator directory (Dr. Ellen Dierenfeld).  For blood samples, please separate plasma and freeze at –70C; tissue samples should also be frozen.  All samples should be shipped overnight on dry ice. *Lab tests may have associated fee – contact investigator for current information.

Investigation of Leptospirosis Cases – Dr. Carole Bolin and Dr. Ken Harkin

For suspected cases of leptospirosis, tissues and serum should be sent to Dr. Bolin and urine or kidney sent to Dr. Harkin for additional diagnostics.  The fluorescent antibody test performed on liver has been the most sensitive test for leptospiral infection and has identified cases that were negative by microagglutination titer.  Any cases of hemolytic anemia should also be tested for leptospiral infection.

Shipping information:

Ship to address listed in investigator directory (Dr. Carole Bolin and Dr. Ken Harkin).  Please include vaccination history with leptospiral bacterins in submission information.  Samples (liver, kidney, and serum) can be frozen at –70C and shipped overnight on dry ice.  Urine can be shipped cool or frozen overnight on wet ice.  *Lab tests are performed for diagnostic purposes and require submitter to pay lab fees – contact investigators for current information.

Investigation of Ulcerative Dermatitis Cases – Dr. Linda Munson

Dr. Munson is reviewing biopsies from all cases of mucocutaneous syndrome.  Duplicate slides or tissue samples should be submitted to her along with your regular pathologist.

Shipping information:

Ship to address listed in investigator directory (Dr. Linda Munson).  Tissues placed in formalin and glutaraldehyde can be sent by US mail.  Duplicate tissue samples and heparinized plasma should be frozen at –70C and shipped overnight on dry ice.

Investigation of Encephalomalacia Cases – Dr. Eric Miller

Although encephalomalacia has occurred primarily in young animals, it should be considered in all deaths of unknown cause.  Symptoms can vary from hyperexcitability to hyperthermia, to a nearly comatose state.

Shipping information:

Ship to address listed in investigator directory (Dr. Eric Miller).  Frozen samples should be shipped overnight on dry ice.  Formalin tissues can be sent by US mail.

Serosurvey of Infectious Diseases – Dr. Michele Miller

Although serologic surveys of small numbers of captive rhinoceros have been performed, a comprehensive survey of multiple infectious diseases and immune parameters has not been completed.  The goal of this project is provide current information on exposure to infectious diseases and immune parameters in the captive population.

Shipping information:

Ship to address listed in investigator directory (Dr. Michele Miller).  Frozen samples should be shipped overnight on dry ice.

Evaluation of Antiphospholipid Syndrome – Dr. Ray Ball

The antiphospholipid syndrome (APS) is defined as the occurrence of thrombosis, fetal losses, and moderate thrombocytopenia in the presence of phospholipid antibodies.  Samples are requested from black rhinos with any of the syndromes affecting this species in captivity to investigate a possible association with APS.  See 2002 SSP report for more details.

Shipping information:

Ship to address listed in investigator directory (Dr. Ray Ball).  Frozen samples should be shipped overnight on dry ice or ice packs.  Dr. Ball will pay shipping fees if contacted prior to shipping.

Evaluation of Foot Lesions and Pathology in Greater Asian One-Horned Rhinoceros – Dr. Mark Atkinson

Dr. Atkinson requests that one intact distal extremity of the pelvic limb (distal to the tarsus) of any Asian one-horned rhinoceros be shipped to him for further studies on foot lesions and pathology affecting this species.

Shipping information:

Please contact Dr. Atkinson for information on preserving and shipping the requested material.  See contact information in the investigator directory.

Sperm Rescue and Banking – Dr. Terri Roth

Dr. Roth has developed successful methods for cryopreserving epididymal sperm samples and is now actively establishing a rhino sperm bank.  Genetically valuable (under-represented) males of all species are especially important.

Shipping information:

Ship to address listed in investigator directory (Dr. Terri Roth).  Remove testes from animal as soon as possible following death.  Place in zip-lock baggies with saline-moistened gauze.  Surround plastic bag with paper towels for insulation then place in styrofoam cooler on cold packs and ship overnight.
