Clinical Experience (to be gained during program)
In collaboration with Midwestern University Veterinary School's zoological medicine rotation, Phoenix Zoo is offering a 4-week externship program in zoological medicine for senior veterinary students in their final clinical year. The extern will participate in all aspects of veterinary care at Phoenix Zoo. This will include daily rounds, preventative medicine examinations, anesthesia, diagnostic imaging, surgery, emergency medicine, necropsies, laboratory diagnostics, and clinical pharmacology. The extern will also be expected to assist with daily care and maintenance of animals and the hospital, including medical treatments, laboratory submissions, and medical record keeping. Phoenix Zoo is an AZA-accredited institution situated on 125 acres of land, approximately 10 minutes from downtown Phoenix, Arizona. The collection consists of more than 1,400 animals including more than 80 species of mammals, 120 species of birds, 90 species of reptiles, and 70 species of amphibians, invertebrates, and fish. The full service veterinary hospital is staffed by two full-time veterinarians, one full-time veterinary intern, two full-time certified veterinary technicians, one full-time hospital keeper, one part-time hospital keeper, and an administrative assistant.

Student applicants should have a strong interest in zoological medicine and conservation. Proof of rabies vaccination and a negative tuberculin skin test http://www.phoenixzoo.org/careof the start date are required. Prior experience working with exotic species is preferable, but not required. Excellent work ethic, communication skills, and a positive, team-oriented attitude are expected. Externs are expected to find their own housing accommodations and transportation during their stay in Phoenix. This is a competitive position and applicants are encouraged to apply far in advance (ideally during their second year of veterinary school).
