Clinical Experience (to be gained during program):

The student will support the zoo’s veterinary department by assisting with all aspects of veterinary care to a diverse collection of over 900 animals. The externship is designed to introduce the student to the field of zoo/exotic veterinary medicine. The extern will report directly to the zoo’s veterinarian.

Research:

A research project is not required but is highly encouraged and supported by the zoo.

Responsibilities:

The student will spend 40 hrs/week assisting the veterinary staff with routine procedures (treatments, immobilizations, diagnostic imaging, necropsies, surgeries, etc), hospital maintenance, and care of animals housed at the veterinary hospital. Responsibilities will be based on the student's experience and interests. Previous experience working with exotic species is highly encouraged.

Duration:

4-8 weeks
