Dear fellow zoo and wildlife veterinarians,
Subject: Research Project: Dermatophytosis in Zoo Macropodids
I am co-supervising a research Honours Project to investigate Dermatophytosis in Zoo macropodids, which requires collecting and collating information from zoos around the world via a Questionnaire.
Despite a high incidence of dermatophytosis reported anecdotally in zoo macropodids worldwide, there is very little published literature on this topic. It is hoped this research will provide useful information to aid in the optimal management of captive macropodid populations, through an improved understanding of epidemiology, pathogenesis, effective treatment regimens, preventative measures and zoonotic and anthroponotic risks associated with dermatophytosis in macropodids.
This research Honours project forms part of the final year of a Bachelor of Veterinary Science degree at the University of Sydney for student Katie Boulton, and is co-supervised by Dr Linda Vogelnest, Specialist Veterinary Dermatologist of the University of Sydney, and myself, Dr Larry Vogelnest, Senior Veterinarian at Taronga Zoo.
The questionnaire should take no more than 30 minutes to complete, and can be returned via email (firstname.lastname@example.org), fax (+61 2 46551212 Attention: Linda Vogelnest), or mailed hard copy (Dr Linda Vogelnest, University Veterinary Teaching Hospital, Camden, Mailbag 4004 Narellan, NSW, 2567, Australia). Only one questionnaire should be completed per institution. Completed questionnaires must be returned by May 20, 2011.
