AAZV Infectious Disease: Disaster Preparedness

Disease Prevention and Management

Liaison: Yvonne Nadler
Liaison: J Jill Heatley

Purpose of the sub-committee of the AAZV Animal Health & Welfare Committee is to support members in disaster preparedness efforts through continuing education opportunities, development of templates for planning/response, web resources, etc. The purpose of the committee does NOT include rostering veterinarians for deployment or technical disaster response.

Committee Members: We currently have 37 members signed up on the AAZV Website Group for Disaster Preparedness Committee. Committee communication is driven through this website feature. To join the group, submit a request to join on the group page.

Secure Zoo Strategy:

The ZAHP Fusion Center has launched its Secure Zoo Strategy project. This step-wise approach to Foreign Animal Disease (FAD) preparedness planning aligns with the Secure Food Supply plans that have already been developed for the agricultural sector. We recommend that the program be conducted in a step-wise manner, and we provide facilities with check lists and templates to assist them in the planning process. We welcome any feedback on the project as it is a ‘living’ effort that will be updated based on suggestions from our community and as FAD policy is updated by United States Department of Agriculture. State and Regional Coordination Meetings

In the wake of last hurricane season, gaps were identified in communication and coordination within our community. To be better prepared for the next hurricane season, the Fusion Center has been assisting industry leaders to organize meetings between facilities and Federal, State and local response authorities to understand the response process in their respective states. Since jurisdictional authority for captive wildlife in emergencies & disasters can vary considerably, we focus on State level coordination efforts. We have assisted with meetings in Texas, North Carolina, and in May 2019 we will be focusing on regional efforts between South Carolina, North Carolina and Georgia. A separate meeting in May will focus on Florida.

Resource Typing for Exotic Animal Strike Teams

The Fusion Center is working with Mr. Eric Thompson of Code 3 Associates to better understand the training that would be recommended to form an Exotic Animal Strike Team (EAST). This team would be a credentialed team that could function as a specialized Search and Rescue team, which would include the skills of a Zoo-wildlife veterinarian. While this project is in its infancy, it relies on basic resource typing used by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). More on this project in the future.

“ZAHP” loosely stands for Zoo and Aquarium All Hazards Preparedness Response and Recovery
