2014 Call for Papers Annual Conference
2014 Call for Abstracts is CLOSED

The American Association of Zoo Veterinarians is seeking proposals from veterinary professionals who would like to present at the 2014 AAZV Annual Conference, October 18-24, 2014 in Orlando, FL, USA.

This year AAZV is particularly interested in talks that fall into the following scientific session themes: Predator-Prey: Carnivores and Hoofstock; Topics in Avian Medicine; Waterworld; Clinical Aquatic Medicine and Management of Life Support Systems; Tips, Tricks, and Case Reports*;  The Art of Anesthesia and Sedation;  One Health: Linking Human, Animal and Environmental Health; Conservation: Bear Focus; Emergency, Critical Care and Advanced Techniques;  Common Ground: AZA and AAZV**; Preventative Medicine, Nutrition and Vaccine Strategies; Behavioral Management: Therapeutics and Training. AAZV also welcomes submissions in other topic areas for several open sessions. If accepted, presentations will be grouped into taxonomically-focused or subject-based sessions.

*Submissions that report on the management of single cases should be limited to novel therapeutics, diagnostics, or case presentations. Single case reports will be largely restricted to the "Tips, Tricks, and Case reports session,” which may run concurrently with other sessions.

**The "Common Ground: AZA and AAZV” session will focus on the bigger picture of the zoo veterinarian’s role in collection management and ex situ conservation of threatened and endangered species. Presentations that focus on the AZA Animal Health Committee, Veterinary SAGs, SSPs, TAGs, and PMPs are welcome in this session.

Important Changes for 2014

AAZV is continuing to require the submission of full abstracts in lieu of titles and summaries. This change was implemented in 2013 in order to better equip session chairs to choose the most appropriate presentations for their sessions. Please note the following information:

  • Abstracts MUST adhere to AAZV formatting guidelines. Guidelines can be found on the AAZV website or by clicking HERE into your browser. Non-adherence to formatting guidelines will have a negative impact on selection. Authors wishing to submit full papers for the conference proceedings will be asked to do so after the abstract has been selected for inclusion in the conference scientific program. The deadline for this is June 1, 2014.
  • Authors will be allowed the opportunity to provide minor revisions to their abstracts after they have been selected for inclusion in the conference scientific program.
  • Authors wishing to pursue publication in peer-reviewed journals are advised to limit their abstract to under 250 words to avoid potential conflicts with later publication.

Evaluation Procedures and Deadlines

  • The AAZV Scientific Program Committee and the session chairpersons will review all submissions and make selections for inclusion in the conference program.
  • Proposals constituting sales pitches for products or services will not be considered.
  • Announcements of accepted presentations and posters will be made by April 24th, 2014.
  • Accepted presenters will be expected to provide a full paper or abstract for the proceedings by June 1, 2014 and adhere to all formatting guidelines.
Complete instructions for speaker and paper presentation will be provided upon notification acceptance.
