Kathryn Gamble Member Spotlight

Kathryn Gamble enjoys Mentoring and Teaching Students

In her many roles for AAZV, Kathryn Gamble currently serves as the Chair of its Infectious Disease Committee. Kathryn is this month's member spotlight.

Her passion for veterinary medicine did not waiver from her first announcement to her family that she would be a zoo veterinarian – when she was 9 years old! Subsequently, Kathryn attended veterinary college at Texas A&M University and also obtained a Master of Science in veterinary pharmacology. Following graduation, she became the associate veterinarian for the Dallas Zoo and Dallas Aquarium at Fair Park for 10 years. Since 2002, she has been the Director of Veterinary Medicine at Lincoln Park Zoo which became an endowed position in 2011 to honor Dr. Lester E. Fisher whom had been an original member of AAZV. Recently she became the first American and first woman to be awarded Diplomate status within the Zoo Health Management sub-specialty by the European College of Zoological Medicine, an elite certification recognizing exceptional expertise in this specialty.

The part of her career enjoyed as much as the clinical medicine has been mentoring and teaching students and residents in the discipline. This year, Kathryn will teach her 50th senior veterinary preceptor – including students from 50% of the AVMA-accredited veterinary schools as well as international schools. In this photo, Kathryn (background) is working with one of her students, Meredith Clancy, whom is now a veterinary resident resident at the Bronx Zoo.
