Effects of land management on interspecies transmission dynamics in rural Kenya

Applications are invited for a postdoctoral research fellowship in  epidemiology and ecology of disease transmission among wildlife, livestock and humans in Kenya. This post is part of a long-term project focusing on Q fever, and supervised by Joe Eisenberg, Rebecca Hardin, and Johannes Foufopoulus at University of Michigan, with partners at the Institute for Conservation Medicine at the St. Louis Zoo, as well as at the University of Nairobi, Mpala Research Centre, and Centers for Disease Control in Kenya. Successful applicants will combine field skills and knowledge of the region with an interest in interdisciplinary analysis of complex human/environment interactions. The ideal candidate has a PhD in the area of disease ecology, epidemiology, geography, or other integrative field, and some previous experience in the analysis of epidemiological or ecological systems. S/he will be responsible for two to four months field research in various sites within Laikipia, Kenya, but based at Mpala Research Centre ( S/he would also spend one to two semesters based at University of Michigan to engage in framework development and/or data analysis, prepare further funding proposals and publication manuscripts, and coordinate international communication for the project. Swahili and/or Maa language and experience in working in African field sites is a plus. Strong spatial and statistical skills would be optimal for this position.

Initial appointments will be for one year, with possible renewal depending on progress.  The salary will be in the range of $45,000 per year (depending on experience), plus fringe benefits.  Starting date is negotiable.
