Sumatra Orphan Fund

The Cincinnati Zoo has established the Sumatran Orphan Scholarship (SOS) Fund and is seeking donations both locally and nationally for this program.  Funds will make it possible for hundreds of orphaned students to continue their education at the IPB Veterinary School at Bogor Agricultural University on Java.  More than 300 students (undergraduate and graduate) at IPB are from Aceh, and many lost their homes and families in the disaster.  Now, they may even lose their dreams as they can no longer afford to continue their college education.

Through its work with the Sumatran rhinoceros, the Cincinnati Zoo has developed close ties with the people and wildlife on the island of Sumatra.  We realize that many other zoos and zoo staff also have strong connections to this part of the world and might want to contribute (individually and/or institutionally) to this fund.  All proceeds from the SOS Fund will go directly to the students from the Aceh province on the island of Sumatra and will help them achieve some of their life goals despite the overwhelming personal losses they are trying to overcome.  In turn, they will become tomorrow’s protectors of the extraordinary wildlife on Sumatra.  The island of Sumatra is home to the largest population of wild Sumatran rhinos, one of the most endangered mammals on earth.

For those interested in contributing to the Sumatran Orphan Scholarship (SOS) Fund at the IPB Veterinary School, donations can be mailed to the Cincinnati Zoo, 3400 Vine Street, Cincinnati, Ohio 45220 Attn:  SOS Fund.  Checks should be made payable to the Cincinnati Zoo with SOS Fund written clearly on them.  (For further information call Lynn Blattman at 513/569-8202)
