Clinical Experience (to be gained during program)
Externs will spend 40-45 hours/week in the treatment room working alongside the veterinarians assisting with handling and restraint of many different species of wildlife, admission and physical exams of new patients, recheck and pre-release assessments, fracture immobilization, wound care and management, drug and fluid administration, radiograph interpretation, orthopedic and soft tissue surgery, anesthesia induction and monitoring, and physical therapy.

Responsibilities
Externs are responsible for assisting the interns, residents, and senior clinicians in the diagnosis and surgical/medical treatment of raptors and other birds admitted to the Center. The caseload is greater than 1,000 birds a year. During the rotation, externs will participate in all aspects of clinical medicine and surgery of raptors including: captive management, anesthesia, medicine and surgery, avian hematology and imaging, and necropsy. A short project is required. Possible topics include a case report, literature review, or other project to be determined by extern interests and the discretion of the faculty.
