Clinical Experience (to be gained during program)
The Zoo de Granby is the most significant zoological garden in Québec (Canada), with trails allowing visitors to observe over 1 500 animals from about 225 exotic species, several of which are part of a species survival plan (SSP). The Zoo de Granby is one of only six institutions in Canada to be accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums and is also accredited by Canada's Accredited Zoos and Aquariums and is a member of the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums. The hospital staff is composed of two veterinarians and two veterinary technicians. A digital x-ray machine, an ultrasound and elaborate endoscopy equipment are available on site while the proximity of the zoo with the Faculté de Médecine Vétérinaire of the Université de Montréal allows for a close collaboration in peculiar cases management as well as advanced medical and surgical procedures.

Students may assist the veterinarian and residents in any clinical procedure and observations . The zoo is located in a French setting. The veterinarians are fluent in English but a basic fluency in French is required from the applicant in order to interact with the rest of the staff (animal keepers, veterinary technicians).

The program is only open to veterinary students in their final (clinical) year.
Students are responsible for their housing

A proof of health care coverage in case of injury is asked
No particular expense is associated with the externship (other than housing and transportation)
Appropriate rabies serologic titers and a negative tuberculin test are asked prior to the externship
Does program accept International applicants?
International applicants may be requested to fulfill specific requirements as per the Canadian federal government regulation. It is the student's responsability to make sure they fulfill potential requirements and validate the necessary documents needed to come and pursue an externship in Canada. These requirements may vary per country of origin. As stated above, a basic knowledge of French language is an important factor to consider.
