This will include daily rounds, preventative medicine examinations, anesthesia, diagnostic imaging, surgery, emergency medicine, necropsies, laboratory diagnostics, and clinical pharmacology. The intern will be expected to assist with daily care and maintenance of animals and the hospital, including medical treatments, laboratory submissions, and medical record keeping. Interns are expected to make great efforts to submit at least one paper for publication in a peer-reviewed journal. They will assist with teaching and mentorship of veterinary students from Midwestern University during students' rotations at the zoo and will actively participate in a monthly journal club. Interns will also facilitate extensive communication with all levels of animal care staff to carry out diagnostic and treatment plans. Phoenix Zoo Phoenix Zoo is an AZA-accredited institution situated on 125 acres of land, approximately 10 minutes from downtown Phoenix, Arizona. The zoo is one of the largest non-profit zoos in the United States, caring for more than 3,000 animals, with nearly 400 species represented, including many threatened or endangered species. The full-service veterinary hospital is staffed by three full-time veterinarians, one full-time veterinary intern, two full-time certified veterinary technicians, one full-time hospital keeper, one part-time hospital keeper, and an administrative assistant Requirements Completion of a DVM or equivalent degree. Graduation from an AVMA accredited veterinary school and a valid US veterinary license. One year of post-graduate internship experience in either a small or large animal clinical setting is required. International candidates must already have a valid visa as the Phoenix Zoo is not able to assist with this process. Applicants should have a strong interest in zoological medicine and conservation. A negative tuberculin skin test within 6 months of the start date is required. Proof of rabies vaccination, negative drug test, and a valid driver’s license are required. Excellent work ethic, communication skills, and a positive, team-oriented attitude are expected. Interns are expected to find their own housing accommodations and transportation during their stay in Phoenix. Application To apply, please submit an application through the Veterinary Internship and Residency Matching Program (VIRMP) website (www.virmp.org). A letter of intent, curriculum vitae, and three letters of recommendation are required. Please see the VIRMP or AAZV website listing for the internship for further details.
