|Pharmaceutical Donation Program|
The pharmaceutical donation program with Zoetis Animal Health continues to bring beneficial support to animal health program needs. Initially started in 2009 as a partnership with Pfizer Animal Health, the Zoetis/Pfizer program has contributed over $1,000,000 of free pharmaceuticals to AAZV members working at non-profit AZA accredited facilities. The donations are sourced by Zoetis from returned product, damaged packaging, and short expiration date (but not less than 6 months).
Every couple of months, Zoetis provides a new inventory of pharmaceutical products, available at no charge to the participants. The inventory is announced via an email to registered participants. The assembled request is shipped to and redistributed by Tom deMaar, DVM at the Gladys Porter Zoo. Depending on the inventory, donated items are distributed in a first come, first serve basis but also with a lean to benefit as many participants as possible. Special requests can be made for worthy endeavors. To date, some 80 institution vets have registered for this program, but all U.S. based, AZA accredited, nonprofit zoos, aquariums and related facilities-- more than 200 in all-- are eligible.
Julie Swenson along with many other colleagues participated in a release of scimitar horned oryx back into the wild. Check out the story HERE.
