This is a one-year, full-time position for a veterinary intern. The intern veterinarian will spend 12 months at the Blank Part Zoo in Des Moines, IA providing veterinary services (anesthesia, examination, diagnosis, medical and surgical treatment) to the animal collection under the direction and supervision of the Chief Veterinarian & Associate Veterinarian. The animal collection consists of fresh & salt-water fishes, invertebrates, amphibians, reptiles, a wide variety of avian species, and mammals including, but not limited to, black rhinoceros, giraffe, okapi, antelopes, pinnipeds, marsupials, and exotic felids. When a supervising veterinarian is not present, the intern veterinarian will be expected to follow existing treatment plans and contact a supervising veterinarian during any emergency. The intern will also have an active role in supervising and teaching veterinary students on rotation at the zoo, including teaching technical skills, facilitating rounds, and didactic lecture opportunities. The intern is expected to complete at least one original research manuscript or case-series report within the course of employment. Participation in weekly and bi-weekly zoological medicine rounds is expected. Hours will be 40+ hours per week, plus shared on-call shifts, weekends and holidays. Successful candidates will be expected to have a high level of proficiency in grammar and spelling, and an ability to handle a flexible workload with a variety of assignments. The candidate must be able to operate independently, exercise initiative, and demonstrate capacity for detail and follow-up. The intern must also be a positive, effective team member and be able to establish professional working relationships with the staff. Candidates with previous experience working with zoo or exotic animals, or having completed one year in private practice or within a supervised veterinary internship, will be given highest preference. Requirements: 1.) Must have a DVM, VMD or an equivalent degree. 2.) Must have successfully completed the National Board examination or its equivalent in the certifying country; must be approved to practice veterinary medicine in the United States. 3.) Must be/become licensed to practice veterinary medicine in the state of Iowa, and possess or obtain an Iowa Driver’s license prior to employment. 4.) Must have the goal of practicing the highest standards of care in veterinary medicine and surgery with a future goal of specialty board certification. 5.) Must have a satisfactory moral and ethical standing. 6.) Must have exceptional written and oral communication skills, and be able to work with a variety of people (zoo guests, students, zookeepers, managers and veterinary colleagues). Compensation: $28,000 per year plus benefits (insurance, vacation, uniform allowance & annual AAZV membership with online journal access).
